Europe and the Arctic
Episodes 14-17

Ever wonder what the animals we talk about look like, or which episodes cover what animals? Find the answers you seek below! Our episode guides give a brief breakdown of each episode as well as links to the articles we discuss, our sources, and of course, pictures of the animals!

All pictures are either Public Domain or Stock photos unless otherwise noted.
Unfortunately we are not able to provide photos for every animal, especially the more obscure ones, due to not being able to obtain photos which don't violate copyright law. For any animals lacking a photo we remind you that Google is your friend.

Episode 14: Deadly Bells and Pantyhose

Casey starts this month off by giving us an update on the insects he has collected thus far, while Ali talks about going on a shopping spree for her cat, Tiger Lily, and what items were Tiger-Lily approved. Casey goes on to talk about a research article that looks at how honeybees are competing with wild bumblebees, before they go on to discuss their Favorite ‘Jellies’ in honor of Jellyfish Day, the Irukandji and the Crystal Jelly. Casey takes us through the wilds of Europe to teach us about the adorable Animal of the Week, the European Mink. They conclude the episode with another round of their ‘Cups’ game.

Episode 15: It's a Snake, It's a Lizard, It's a Sheltopusik

Ali talks about meeting her friend’s new puppy, and gives some pet advice on what to get and how to be properly prepared for bringing a pup into your home. Casey gives a biology lesson discussing how insects, of all animals, are so successful, and make up a bulk of the animal species on earth. They discuss which animals they consider to be their Favorites from Greece, the Mediterranean Horseshoe Bat and the Beech Marten, before  Casey educates us on the deceptive looking Animal of the Week, the Sheltopusik. Ali rounds out the episode with another round of their Jeopardy-like game for Casey.

Episode 16: Listener's Choice

Casey starts the episode out focusing on creepy crawlies again by talking about making identification for insects he’s collected before giving a biology lesson on the fascinatingly weird world of insect sex. Ali gives some positive news on Australia’s wildlife after all the wildfires, specifically the discovery of two new marsupial species of Greater Glyders, bringing it to a total of three species of Greater Glyders instead of the previously thought one. They discuss what birds they consider their Favorite Species of European Waterfowl, the King Eider and the Mandarin Duck, before Casey teaches us about a much more grounded feathery Animal of the Week, the Rock Ptarmigan. They end the episode with another round of naming animals for every letter of a specific animal, this time the Rock Ptarmigan, but this time they can only name birds.

Episode 17: Pretty Parasites

Casey discusses the stress of already registering for another quarter of online classes and emphasizes his existential crisis, while Ali expresses how she misses Disneyland and the cats that live there. Casey then gives us a biology lesson on what a trophic ricochet is, and why certain animals are incredibly important in ecosystems. They go on to talk about their Favorite European Owl Species, the Eurasian Eagle Owl and the Snowy Owl . Casey then informs us about our much smaller, but still winged, Animal of the Week, the Alcon Blue Butterfly. They bring the episode to a close with another round of their ‘Cups’ challenge.
